I'm a massive fan of David Lynch and I also love the Dune book. Yet I've never gotten around to watching Dune until now. I admit the terrible reputation of the movie has been a big part of why I've avoided it, but how bad can it really be right? The answer is, pretty bad.
I has some of the hammiest acting I have ever seen. Some of it was so bad I had to turn away from the screen in embarrassment. The bad guys are all total caricatures and it was hard to take anyone seriously. Camper than a jamboree, but not in a fun way.
The score was also pretty bad. 80's operatic rock has never been a favourite and Toto certainly pulls out all the stops here. We're bombarded by majestic electric guitars way past the point of over-saturation.
And worst of all is the endless exposition. Everything happening on screen apparently has to be explained by a narrator or an inner monologue. Some of the time they're flat out describing what we can already see happening on screen.
The less said about the special effects the better. In 1984 they should have been able to do a lot better.
So, does it have any redeeming features? The art deco inspired sets are pretty cool. The film certainly looks interesting and unique. Unfortunately, that's about it.
Worth watching once but I doubt I could sit through that again.

The vision of this film is enormous. It's an epic beyond our times that sets standards for all science fiction films. Dune can be a bit complex the first time you see it because you don't see important details of what takes place before the film, and you don't see how things are resolved after. With a storyline so deep, it would have been impossible to include any more information into already 3 hour movie. The only negative thing I can say it that it really left me wanting to know more about the character's pasts, but at the same time just enough information is presented to keep you interested and wondering. Dune would have made an excellent trilogy, with this film being the second of the three, but it has been so well written and directed that it obviously stands perfectly on its own. If this movie has received some low ratings it's only because it can be very difficult to take in all it has to offer with only one viewing. I recommend watching the expanded version because it offers a nice 15 minute or so introduction that makes it easier to appreciate all the complex elements of Dune. I gave it a 10.
